Relative to Commending the
California State University, Fresno
Armenian Studies Program
WHEREAS, The California State University, Fresno Armenian
Studies Program will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on February
9, 2003, and it is appropriate upon this occasion to draw the special
attention of the public to the program for the significant opportunities
it has provided to the students and faculty throughout the years;

WHEREAS, The current Armenian Studies Program at California State
University, Fresno was established in 1977 when Dr. Dickran Kouymjian
was invited from Paris to become Professor of Armenian Studies and
Coordinator of the Program pioneered by Dr. Louise Nalbandian and
Dr. Arra Avakian; and

WHEREAS, The program has gained national and international recognition
as the largest such undergraduate program anywhere, and for the
past 24 years it has sponsored and published the only regularly
published University Armenian student newspaper Hye Sharzhoom;

RESOLVED BY SENATOR CHARLES S. POOCHIGIAN, That he draws the special
recognition of the public to the California State University, Fresno
Armenian Studies Program on the celebration of its 25th Anniversary,
points with immense pride to the valuable educational opportunities
and inspiration it provides to students and faculty, and extends
sincere best wishes for the programs continued success in
the future.
