Minutes of the SAS
Annual Membership
Meeting Held on
November 19, 1999
in Washington,
D.C.
Present were: Dr. Dennis Papazian, President; Dr. George Bournoutian, Vice-President;
Dr. Peter Cowe, Secretary; Mr. Gerald Ottenbreit, as observer, and about
twenty-six members in attendance.
The meeting was called to order by the President, Dr. Dennis Papazian,
at 9:10 p. m.
1) The minutes of
last year?s annual business meeting were approved (Dr. Joseph A. Kechichian
moved, Miss Gia Aivazian seconded). They had been approved earlier
by the Executive Council at its last phone meeting and published in the
Newsletter.
2) Financial Report
For fuller details
see the report circulated.
Dr. Dennis Papazian
reported that the SAS cash on hand as of 11/18/99 was $16,950.09.
The Journal had begun
the year with a deficit of $3,785.58, had subsequently generated $71.00
in income, sustained $5,615.07 in expenses, and hence ended with a deficit
of $9,325.65.
Discussion: The Armenian
Studies Program at Fresno was thanked for subventing a part of the cost
of the Newsletter. The Newsletter?s longer-term financial situation was
unclear. The sense of the meeting was that in future JSAS finances should
be merged with those of the Society in the financial report.
3) Membership Report
Dr. Dennis Papazian
reported that the Society had lost four old members and gained two new
over the year, the current figure standing at 222 (139 regular members,
21 retired, 21 students, 40 supporting, 1 institutional). Records showed
that 16 members had not paid for three years, 45 for two years, and 117
for this year. Three applications for regular membership had been received
but could not be voted upon by the executive council because of a lack
of quorum.
The report was approved
(Miss Gia Aivazian moved, Dr. Levon Marashlian seconded).
4) Journal Report
Dr. Dennis Papazian
reported that it was planned that volume 10 should go to press on January
9, 2000. Vol. 11 is to be a special number guest-edited by Dr. Michael
E. Stone and Dr. Nira Stone and is to comprise the papers presented at
a conference they organized on Armenian pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
Dr. Dennis Papazian
mentioned the problem of the timely submission of reviews to the editor.
Mr. Hilmar Kaiser
brought up a question regarding a review of his which appeared in JSAS
vol. 9. Dr. Dennis Papazian said that questions regarding editorial policy
be submitted in writing to the editor and the editorial board. There was
some discussion of who would be the competent authority in such cases.
5) Executive Council
Election Results
Dr. Dennis Papazian
announced that Dr. Richard G. Hovannisian and Dr. Robert H. Hewsen had
received the highest number of votes in the ballot and were accordingly
welcomed onto the Executive Council to fill the two empty positions.
6) Newsletter Report
This could not be
given in the absence of Barlow Der Mugrdechian because of his mother?s
serious illness. A vote of thanks was extended to him for his excellent
editorship of the Newsletter.
The low turnout at
the afternoon seminar at the Library of Congress was deplored.
Since only eight people
had made reservations for the dinner and discussion at St. Mary?s scheduled
for November 21, the event had been canceled.
7) Old Business
There was no old business.
8) Armenian Films
at MESA ?99
Miss Gia Aivazian
mentioned that four had been submitted, from which two had been approved:
?Enemy of the People? (on the Stalinist period on the Armenian Republic)
and ?Wall of Silence? (on the dialogue between the scholars Dr. Taner Akcam
and Dr. Vahagn Dadrian).
9) New Business
Vincent Lima, a guest,
raised some questions relating to standards of ethical conduct in the society
and the appropriate mechanism for handling such issues. In the ensuing
discussion Dr. Joseph A. Kechichian suggested that the Executive Council
create an ethics committee.
10) Nominating Committee
Dr. Peter Cowe presented
the Executive Council?s suggested candidates for the 2000 election nominating
committee (Aram Arkun, Dr. Levon Avdoyan, and Dr. Levon Marashlian). The
choice was seconded by Dr. Joseph A. Keshishian, and approved.
11) Nominations from
the Floor

the executive council?s suggested candidates for the 2000 election (Dr.
Houri Berberian and Dr. Sylvie Merian). Both were approved.
12) Adjournment
Motion to adjourn
the meeting was made by Dr. Joseph A. Kechichian and seconded by Miss Gia
Aivazian.

at 10:25 p.m.
