Survivor Memoirs of the Armenian Genocide
Lorne Shirinian, Survivor
Memoirs of the Armenian Genocide, Taderon Press: Reading (England), 1999;
Paperback, ISBN 0-9535191-4-7, 81 pages (with illustrations).
An excellent introduction
to survivor memoirs of the Armenian Genocide in Armenian diasporan literature.
Shirinian?s analysis is primarily through a literary perspective and focuses
on American-Armenian publications. ?There exists no suitable ready-made
form to give shape and meaning to their tragedy [the 1915 genocide], and
the writers know that few could have shared the same experiences. Therefore
the way they have chosen to construct their memoir and autobiographical
narratives is by incorporating the techniques often appropriate to the
novel.? Shirinian discusses literary techniques, points out similar works
on the Holocaust, and includes photographic images used in memoir literature
of the Genocide.
He also discusses
the impact official Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide. ?Because of
the onslaught of genocide denial and the willingness of some states to
accept the perpetrator?s version of the historical events, it is often
difficult for Armenians to control the images that represent them. Taken
individually, narrative texts in the Armenian diaspora often appear as
broken and fragmentary. It seems that for Armenians, memory is not enough;
when they speak, they need to retell their story from the beginning on
each occasion as any chance for a conjunction of memory, language and contemporary
life often appears to be thwarted. Because so much has been lost, representation
is all that remains.? Nevertheless, Shirinian concludes that despite the
experience of mass annihilation, survivor memoirs are acts of resistance
and life affirmation.
Lorne Shirinian is
a poet, fiction writer, and professor of comparative literature. He is
currently head of the Department of English at the Royal Military College
of Canada. His works include Quest for Closure: the 1915 Genocide, the
Armenian Community in Canada, and the Federal Government, History of Armenia
and Other Fiction, and Rough Landing.

The Codex Etchmiadzin
We are pleased to inform you, that our publishing house, the Akademische
Druck und Verlagsanstalt in Graz, Austria, has now completed another
remarkable Fine Art Facsimile-Project. The Codex Etchmiadzin is one of
the most fascinating of all illuminated manuscripts. It is treated today
like a sacred relic and may no longer leave the Mashtots Matenadaran Library,
in Yerevan, Armenia, where it is kept. It is certainly one of the most
precious manuscripts in the world.
The 19 miniatures of this work are a testimony to the greatness of painting
in Armenian book illumination, especially in the case of four miniatures
from the 6th century which are not only the oldest examples of Armenian
book art, but were also to have a decisive influence on the development
of book production in Eastern Europe.
The text of the manuscript brings us closer to the original texts of the
four Evangelists than is the case with almost any other script. The unique
significance of this manuscript is complemented by its magnificent binding
and two monumental ivory plates.
